In this workshop, you will learn about content creation and social media as a skill, and how this skill can be leveraged as an alternative career, or to boost an alternative career. This workshop will be especially useful for anyone who is interested in starting their own business, freelancing (whether full-time or part-time), or becoming a content creator in general.

Topics will include:

  • Understanding and finding an audience
  • Types of content (typically found on TikTok, Instagram, and LinkedIn)
  • Carving out a niche (including branding and personal identity)
  • Platform-specific strategies
  • Success stories/popular creators and how they use their content to market a business
  • Monetization and alternative careers

The workshop will include a content planning exercise around a creator of language-focused educational content. Participants will join breakout rooms to engage in hands-on content planning. Each breakout group will be assigned a specific platform and asked to brainstorm some content ideas, including audience, strategies, niche, etc. At the end of the workshop, breakout groups will come back together to present their ideas and receive feedback from the instructor.

For those who are not interested in personally pursuing alternative careers through content creation, the takeaways will still be useful for personal branding and marketing. These strategies can help you in your job search as you improve your self-promotion strategies on professional networking sites like LinkedIn.
